It is the third larges city in New York and the center of Monroe County which also includes Livingston, Orleans, Genesee, Ontario and Wayne Counties. It is also called the Flower City or The World’s Image Center. Having 36 neighborhoods with each having their own characteristics and unique from each other, it is also known as the city of neighborhoods. If you love the serenity of nature, there is the residential tree lined avenues of Maplewood. Now if you are more of the eclectic type, you will love South Wedge Business district. Then there is Browncroft if gracious homes are what you are looking for.
It is the 6th Most Livable Cities among the 379 metropolitan areas according to the Places Rated Almanac. In 2007, it was given the top rank for quality of life and 6th for best metropolitan public schools nationwide by the Expansion Management Magazine. Rochester NY is considered to be one of the best places to live in because of its available to all wide range of resources. The city has everything one will need, whether for a single person or for a family, from the most beautiful architecture, parks business center and cultural centers.
When it comes to city employment, the city has around 3500 people in different jobs. The city boasts of having competitive pay, opportunities for advancement and comprehensive benefits for its employees. The city is also very supportive of its local large and small businesses. Assistance to businesses in the city as well as for those who want to relocate to the city is provided by its Economic Development Department.
Rochester NY also offers wide range of entertainment and recreational opportunities. There are always free concerts and other celebrations. The Garth Fagan Dance Troupe which performs around the city for various occasions calls the city its home. For those who love the arts there is the Rochester City Ballet and the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. You will find the history of Rochester in its architecture and in its museums since the city takes deep pride in its history. Of course other works of art are also showcased, such as the dolls at the Chili Doll Hospital and Victorian Doll Museum and the unique collections at George Eastman House. And for those who love sports, there are the usual indoor and outdoor sports. There are also cycling, mountain climbing and running clubs. Of course boating on Lake Ontario, the Fingers Lake, the Genesee River and the Erie Canal are something you can always enjoy.

This water power would eventually prove to be vital to the flour producing industry. After surveying began in 1811, streets and roads were laid out, and in 1817 other area landowners joined their holdings with the Hundred Acre Tract to form the Village of Rochesterville. Rochesterville was the seat of Monroe County, New York by 1821 and was rechartered as a city under the shortened name of Rochester in 1834.
The Erie Canal Aqueduct, at the site of the modern day Broad Street Bridge in downtown Rochester NY, was built in 1823 to direct the waters of the newly constructed Erie Canal over the Genesee River. Rochester was now connected to all points east and west by the Erie Canal.

Cultural institutions abound. If cultural pursuits are more your style, there are the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and the Geva Theatre Center, the Rochester Museum and Science Center, the Memorial Art Gallery, and the Strong National Museum of Play.
If sports is more your thing, you will not be disappointed. Rochester boasts several local professional sports teams, such as the Rochester Red Wings baseball team, the Rochester Americans ice hockey team, Rochester Rhinos soccer team, Rochester Knighthawks indoor lacrosse team, the Rochester Razorsharks basketball team, and the Rochester Raiders indoor football team.
